Aditya Birla Group Chairman, Kumar Mangalam Birla, has announced that the group’s building materials business is poised for significant growth, driven by the country’s dynamic housing and infrastructure sectors.
Addressing the annual general meeting of Grasim Industries, Birla emphasized the strong macroeconomic fundamentals, a resilient financial sector, and confident consumers, all contributing to a positive outlook for India’s growing economy. These factors, coupled with the government’s capital expenditure, are expected to fuel both investment and consumer demand.
Over the past five years, Grasim has invested ₹50,000 crore in capital expenditure, with 77% dedicated to growth initiatives. Notably, in the financial year 2023-24 alone, the company spent ₹20,000 crore, marking the largest capital expenditure in its history. This substantial investment positions Grasim for continued growth.
The group is placing further emphasis on expansion in the cement and decorative paints sectors. UltraTech Cement, a key subsidiary, is rapidly increasing its production capacity through acquisitions and brownfield expansions.
The recent acquisition of India Cements Limited (ICL) for ₹3,142 crore is expected to further boost UltraTech’s capacity, putting the company on track to surpass an annual production capacity of 200 million tons (MTPA) by FY27. This would make UltraTech the third-largest cement producer in the world outside of China.
The group’s new decorative paints business, Birla Opus, is also progressing well, with production already underway at three plants. With a target of generating ₹10,000 crore in revenue within three years, all six plants are expected to be fully operational by FY25.
In the digital space, Birla Pivot, the group’s B2B e-commerce platform, achieved over ₹1,000 crore in revenue in its first year. The platform aims to reach $1 billion (₹8,500 crore) in revenue within the next three years.
Grasim is committed to sustainability, targeting net-zero emissions by 2050. Through its subsidiaries, UltraTech Cement, Aditya Birla Capital, and Aditya Birla Renewables, Grasim remains a leading player in India’s cement, financial services, and clean energy sectors.
