The Institute of Civil Engineers and Architects (ICEA), Surat, in collaboration with Hathi Sidhee Cement, successfully organized a highly engaging technical seminar titled “Emerging Trends in Special Concretes for Next-Generation Structures” as part of CONCRETE PULSE – The Engineers’ Meet.
The event brought together civil engineers, architects, contractors, and technical professionals from across South Gujarat to explore the evolving landscape of concrete technologies.
The event was graced by ICEA President Er. Kamlesh Vaishnav and Hon. Secretary Er. Narendra Kotadia, with coordination by Dr. Jigar Sevalia.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Shivang Jayswal, Junior Scientific Officer at the School of Engineering and Technology, National Forensic Sciences University, Gandhinagar.
Dr. Jayswal is known for his deep research and expertise in the field of special concretes and forensic structural engineering.
Shiv Vyas, Head – Technical Services at Hathi Sidhee Cement, delivered an engaging talk on “Empowering Engineers & Cementing Relations.”
He emphasized the company’s role in supporting engineers through innovative materials, technical expertise, and customized solutions.
His address reflected the brand’s commitment to quality, collaboration, and advancing construction practices with practical, field-driven support and continuous innovation.

1. The Evolution of Concrete :
Dr. Jayswal opened with a historical perspective on concrete, transitioning to the modern era where concrete is no longer seen as a basic structural material but as a highly engineered solution tailored to specific project needs.

He introduced a wide array of new-age concretes such as :
- Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC)

A major section of the talk was devoted to the need for alternative binder materials and the role of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) like fly ash, silica fume, and GGBS.
Dr. Jayswal shared insights on designing high-strength and ultra-high-strength concrete using blended concretes, which also help reduce carbon footprints and energy consumption.
4. Translucent Concrete & Architectural Applications :
Highlighting the integration of aesthetics with functionality, translucent concrete was discussed as a non-structural but innovative material allowing natural light to penetrate through walls, reducing dependency on artificial lighting.

The seminar also detailed various fresh property tests for SCC like Slump Flow, J-Ring, L-Box, U-Box, and V-Funnel, reinforcing the importance of quality control and mix design optimization.
