Green Gujarat Summit 2025 was an important platform to showcase Gujarat’s forward-looking and collaborative efforts towards sustainable urban development and a net-zero future. The summit further strengthened the state’s commitment to environmental responsibility and innovative construction methods, which are directly linked to India’s sustainable development goals. CREDAI National President Shekhar Patel said on the occasion that CREDAI has taken a pledge to afforest one lakh acres of land in the next five years, out of which 9000 acres have already been afforested near Nashik. With the collaboration of stakeholders from real estate, design, infrastructure and government sectors, the event has emerged as a national leader in the green building movement.
Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), in association with the Department of Urban Development and Housing, Government of Gujarat, successfully organized the second edition of Green Gujarat Summit 2025 on June 6, 2025 at Hotel Crowne Plaza, Ahmedabad. With the theme “Advancing Net Zero: Pioneering a Greener Gujarat”, the summit further strengthened Gujarat’s leading position in sustainable construction and urban development.
Gujarat is at the forefront of the green building movement at the national level, with over 1100 IGBC-registered projects across residential, commercial, industrial and institutional sectors. IGBC-rated developments are on the rise in major cities like Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara, reflecting the growing awareness and commitment among developers and policy makers.
The summit was attended by over 400 stakeholders from real estate, infrastructure, sustainability and government sectors, making it the largest platform to accelerate the net-zero and climate-resilient agenda in Gujarat.
The inaugural session was attended by D.J. Jadeja, IAS, Secretary, Urban Development and Housing Department, Government of Gujarat. He said in his keynote address, “The Gujarat government has shown its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility by making it mandatory to make all government buildings green. To achieve this goal and build climate-resilient cities, the government, real estate developers and educational institutions need to work through collaboration and innovation.”
Other keynote speakers include CREDAI National President Shekhar Patel, CII Gujarat State Council President Premraj Kashyap, IGBC Ahmedabad Chapter President Jayesh Haryani, IGBC Ahmedabad Chapter Past President Sameer Sinha, IGBC Past National President Gurmit Singh Arora and IGBC Ahmedabad Chapter Co-President Taral Shah.
Shekhar Patel stressed the need for a future-oriented approach in the real estate industry and said, “The future of real estate is to create spaces that are not only smart and efficient, but also sustainable, inclusive and resilient for decades to come. Developers need to adopt green building practices and technologies that promote environmental responsibility. CREDAI is committed to collaborating with stakeholders to create a built environment that is in line with national sustainability goals. CREDAI has committed to afforesting one lakh acres of land in the next five years. Work has also begun on 9000 acres near Nashik.”
Premraj Kashyap, presenting sustainability as an environmental and economic opportunity, said, “Our member companies have made efforts that have reduced operational costs through sustainable practices, energy efficiency, increased property value, marketability, improved health and productivity of residents, resilience to the impacts of climate change, and compliance with regulatory frameworks.”
A major highlight of the summit was the recognition of IGBC-Certified Green Buildings, which recognizes projects that represent environmental responsibility. Gurmeet Singh Arora commented, “Decarbonizing our built environment is no longer an option; it is the foundation of India’s climate leadership and our collective responsibility to future generations.”
In a panel discussion on “Scaling Net-Zero Strategies for Gujarat: Challenges and Opportunities” at the IGBC Green Gujarat Summit 2025, Adarsh Patel, MD, Sangini Group, said that developers face hurdles in availing the discount on paid up FSI for developing green buildings, and linking it with BUC further delays the developers. Also, if for any reason the certification falls in a lower category than expected, there is a provision of hefty fines, which discourages developers from getting green building certification. There is a need to make it practical. Another point he raised was that currently, subsidy for installing solar panels in projects is given to individual property owners, so if it is given to developers, the installation can be done more efficiently and properly. Its planning can be done on a larger scale, its scope can also be expanded quickly and the adoption of green technology can increase. The government representative present responded positively to the issue and assured to consider making the policies more developer-friendly. “
Jayesh Haryani, emphasizing the summit’s role in climate action, said, “Through the Green Gujarat Summit, we aim to expand innovations in net-zero architecture, material efficiency and climate-resilient design, which will redefine sustainability for the state and the nation.”
Sameer Sinha added, “Bold design thinking, progressive policies and a firm commitment to green values in every sector of development are required to advance net-zero in Gujarat.”
At the IGBC Green Gujarat Summit 2025, Ishan Shah, Director, Nitya Nsafe Environmental Consultancy, fully supported this noble event and said that this event is an eye-opener and a new direction to save our beloved Planet Earth. Speaking about the contribution of Nitya Nsafe, he said that the organization has recycled 20 crore liters of waste water in 2024 and has set a target of 60 crore liters in 2025. Shah emphasized that these efforts are a bold step towards a clean, green and strong India, which is fully in line with the vision of sustainable development of the summit.
IGBC focused on four key pillars: promoting net-zero buildings, demonstrating climate-resilient infrastructure, advancing the practice of low-carbon materials and the reusable economy, and strengthening Gujarat’s leadership in sustainable development. In summary, Taral Shah said, “The Green Gujarat Summit reflects our collective resolve to push the boundaries of sustainable design and construction. Gujarat is proud to lead this movement, and through IGBC, we want to create a future where every building contributes to a green and healthy future.”
