YUGEN REALTY, Surat.

On 26th July 2025, the design and architecture fraternity of Surat gathered at the Surat Marriott Hotel for a landmark presentation by one of India’s foremost architectural minds — Ar. Rajeev Kathpalia, Managing Partner at Vastu Shilpa Sangath LLP.

Organized by the IIA Surat Centre and IIID Surat Regional Chapter, the event brought together architects, interior designers, engineers, academicians, and students for an intellectually and emotionally enriching evening.

Design with Depth: Ar. Rajeev Kathpalia’s Philosophy

At the core of Ar. Kathpalia’s work lies a deep-rooted belief in responsible, people-centric, and context-sensitive architecture. His design philosophy is a continuation of the legacy of Ar. B.V. Doshi, but with its own distinct vision — one that emphasizes:

• Frugality with dignity: Creating high-impact spaces with low resource footprints.

• Environmental integration: Designing buildings and campuses that work in harmony with the local climate, topography, and ecology.

• Social equity: Ensuring design solutions are inclusive, accessible, and respectful of community dynamics.

• Holistic planning: Blending architecture with landscape, energy systems, and cultural continuity.

He believes architecture must not only address the functional needs of today but also anticipate the ecological and social needs of tomorrow. His words during the presentation encapsulated his ethos: “Design is not about imposing ideas; it’s about revealing the inherent possibilities of a place — and allowing people to belong.”

Remarkable Works That Define His Legacy

Ar. Kathpalia’s body of work spans scales, geographies, and typologies, from institutional campuses to urban masterplans — each one rooted in climate, culture, and community.

• Nalanda University, Bihar : A masterfully planned 455-acre net-zero campus in Rajgir, rooted in India’s academic and spiritual legacy. The project blends water, landscape, brickwork, and passive design — a model of sustainable educational infrastructure.

• Godavari Towers, Ahmedabad : A response to vertical urban density, this residential high-rise combines natural light, ventilation, and spatial balance without losing affordability or sustainability.

• Banana Leaf-Inspired School : A playful yet profound school design with roofs shaped like banana leaves — reflecting vernacular sensibility, climate responsiveness, and child-friendly spaces.

• Smritivan Earthquake Memorial, Bhuj : An architectural tribute to resilience, this museum is among UNESCO’s 7 most beautiful museums in the world (2024).

• Charminar Precinct Redevelopment, Hyderabad : Award-winning urban revitalization project that merges history, community, and accessibility.

• Institutional Campuses – IIT Hyderabad, NIIT University, TCS Think Campus : Cited in the National Education Policy for their excellence in integrated and green learning environments.

Reflections from Industry Leaders

Ar. Vijay Chauhan, Chairman, IIA Surat Centre speaking to Yugen Realty Newspaper said, “Ar. Kathpalia’s presence has uplifted our collective architectural consciousness. His philosophy shows us that real design value comes from authenticity and adaptability, not superficial labels.”

Ar. Sohel Mansur, Chairman, IIID Surat Regional Chapter shared, “He showed us that good design is not just about creating form, but about cultivating life, memory, and possibility through space. It was a masterclass in humane architecture.”

A Gathering of Influential Minds

The program was graced by the presence of Ar. Sarosh Wadia, President – IIID National, and Ar. Jignesh Modi, along with several renowned architects, interior designers, and respected members of the Surat design fraternity.

A lively and interactive Q&A session followed the presentation, where the audience posed thoughtful questions on sustainability, urbanism, and design ethics — further enriching the evening’s value.

Post-event, the atmosphere transitioned into relaxed and joyful networking, where members exchanged ideas over a sumptuous dinner, deepening the spirit of camaraderie and collaboration in the design community.

This event, supported by Nexion, Olive, Shipra, Bellissa, Daikin, Havells, Unimaple, and others, was more than a presentation — it was an invitation to rethink the role of architecture in shaping a better world.

An Evening to Remember

This event reaffirmed how architecture can be both poetic and purposeful. Through such knowledge series programs, IIA Surat Centre and IIID Surat Regional Chapter continue to cultivate a culture of critical thinking, dialogue, and professional growth in the region.

As Ar. Kathpalia reminded everyone — “True architecture is not a monument, but a mirror — it must reflect who we are, and who we aspire to become.”
