Recently, The Economic Master Plan (EMP) for the Surat Economic Region (SER) was inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel as part of NITI Aayog’s Growth Hub (G-HUB) program.

The EMP primarily aims to position SER as a leader in real estate, economic growth, innovation, and entrepreneurship. This initiative was bolstered by the substantial participation of leading industrialists, developers, organizations, and local citizens.

Focusing on real estate, the EMP sets the stage for extensive real estate development and transformation within SER.

Leveraging infrastructure projects, sustainable urban planning, and advanced construction technologies, the plan seeks to elevate SER as a prime real estate destination, attracting significant interest from investors and developers.

Consequently, modern and meticulously planned cities are expected to arise in SER, fostering growth in tourism, IT, and logistics sectors.

The plan projects an increase in SER’s GDP from $72 billion to $1.3 trillion by 2047, covering districts such as Surat, Bharuch, Navsari, Tapi, Dang, and Valsad, making real estate development a pivotal element of this visionary transformation.

Ashesh Doshi from Surat Diamond Bourse stressed the need for enhanced infrastructure to elevate Surat to global city standards, mentioning ongoing projects like the Metro Train and Bullet Train. He advocated for meticulous micro-planning to support these initiatives.

Rajat from Gems and Jewellery noted Surat’s emergence as a global hub for lab-grown diamonds, suggesting that the Surat Diamond Bourse could revolutionize the Dream City project in Surat, becoming a central market from manufacturing to trading.

The seminar ‘Shaping Cities of the Future’ held under the Economic Development Plan at Surat aimed to cultivate the ‘Surat Economic Region’ as a growth nucleus.

Dignitaries such as Finance and Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai, Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghavi and Mayor Dakshesh Mavani discussed these initiatives.

Minister Sanghavi remarked on Gujarat’s increasing contribution to India’s GDP – from 6.1% in 2000 to 8.1% in 2024 – and the bright investment prospects for Surat.

He envisioned a robust return on investment for future generations, with state and municipal efforts focusing on enabling Surat’s youth to excel in IT, tourism, and service sectors, thereby making the economic development plan a transformative strategy.

Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agarwal observed that while cities generate 65% of the country’s GDP from merely 3% of its land, India’s shift from a rural to an urban economy is expected to continue until 2047, with 70% of the population residing in cities.

She highlighted that states like Gujarat are advancing in urbanization, comparing this progression to global cities such as New York and London.

Agarwal detailed that in the Surat region, special focus would be on sectors like Diamonds, Chemicals, Textiles and Agro-processing.

Plans include integrating various specialized cities – Education City, Medical City, Tourism City, Industrial City and Commercial City into the real estate framework, aiming to enhance the economic landscape comprehensively.
