The Gujarat government has approved the creation of a new district, Vav-Tharad, carved out of Banaskantha, with its headquarters in Tharad. Additionally, the state cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, sanctioned the formation of nine new municipal corporations.
“Banaskantha district, the largest in the state by talukas and the second largest by area, has been reorganized to ensure better accessibility and facilities for its residents,” said senior minister and government spokesperson Rushikesh Patel.
The newly-formed Vav-Tharad district will comprise eight talukas – Vav, Bhabhar, Tharad, Dhanera, Suigam, Lakhni, Diyodar, and Kankrej – and will include four municipalities. Meanwhile, the reorganized Banaskantha district will retain six talukas, with Palanpur as its headquarters.
“After the split, Vav-Tharad will cover 6,257 square km, while Banaskantha will span 4,486 square km, encompassing around 600 villages each,” Patel stated.
The cabinet also approved the creation of nine new municipal corporations, effectively increasing Gujarat’s total municipal corporations from eight to 17. The new corporations will be established in Navsari, Vapi, Anand, Nadiad, Mehsana, Surendranagar/Wadhwan, Morbi, Porbandar/Chhaya, and Gandhidham.
Incorporating municipalities and gram panchayats into larger administrative units, this transformation aims to strengthen governance and improve service delivery. For example, Navsari Municipal Corporation will integrate the existing municipality with four gram panchayats, while Gandhidham Municipal Corporation will include six gram panchayats.
“This restructuring will enhance governance by ensuring faster, more efficient, and transparent processes,” the spokesperson minister added. It aims to boost infrastructure development in areas like roads, sanitation, sewerage, and healthcare. The state government has committed to providing the necessary support to rural areas merged into the new corporations.
The initiative aligns with NITI Aayog’s vision of “Cities as Engines of Growth” and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policy of “Je Kahevu Te Karvu” (Delivering on Commitments). It is part of Chief Minister Patel’s broader vision for “Viksit Gujarat@2047,” focusing on economic and lifestyle advancements.
The new municipal corporations are also expected to facilitate major projects, such as Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), Metro Rail, and Riverfront development, while creating significant employment opportunities. With these changes, Gujarat will now have 17 municipal corporations and 149 municipalities.
