South Gujarat is rapidly emerging as a solar hub. SGSA is guiding the industry through technical development, policy advocacy, training and new technologies and continuously empowering stakeholders as the region moves towards renewable energy independence.
South Gujarat has been growing rapidly in the field of green energy in the last few years. The South Gujarat Solar Association was established in 2020 amidst the growth of panel manufacturers, EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) companies in the solar industry, increasing customer queries and misunderstanding about the policy. With the introduction of residential solar subsidy, the EPC market started changing rapidly, and industry leaders came together to guide this change. 25-30 EPC experts from the industry including Hiren Bhavsar, Rakesh Trivedi, Nilesh Talaviya, Tejas Patel, Sanjay Patel, Monarch Patel, Rakesh Bhatt, along with others, founded this organization. Today, SGSA has a strong network of more than 200 EPC players, manufacturers and consultants.
Vision – Mission of Quality, Transparency and Technical Development
Since its inception, SGSA has adopted a clear mission for the solar industry—to make South Gujarat a technically strong, transparent and quality-driven solar market. Quality is the most important element in a system that has been running for 25 years, and SGSA has been continuously striving to provide leadership to EPC companies in proper installation practices, safety standards and technical knowledge. The organization’s goal is not only to empower EPC companies, but also to build a developmental bridge between customers and policymakers.
SGSA’s important place in policy advocacy
SGSA’s most valuable contribution is in the field of policymaking. SGSA regularly interacts with the government, GEDA and DGVCL on a range of issues ranging from net metering to subsidies, DCR, open access and industrial solar tariffs. When a new policy comes out, SGSA explains its precise meaning to the members, removes misunderstandings and presents amendments to the government if the policy is not practical. EPC members provide SGSA with a strong platform to convey their voice to policymakers, keeping in mind the ground reality.
Training and knowledge sharing programs for technical enrichment
SGSA is constantly active in making the solar industry in South Gujarat technically enriched. Technical seminars are organized for EPC companies on inverters, switchgear, cabling, safety and energy storage solutions. Advance training is provided in collaboration with OEM companies. In addition, practical guidance is provided to EPC teams by conducting study sessions with DGVCL. The organization has been organizing cricket tournaments for the last three years to increase unity in the EPC platform, which strengthens the spirit of friendship, networking and cooperation among the members.
Surat – South Gujarat: India’s Emerging Solar Hub
Today, Surat – South Gujarat is considered one of the top regions in the country in solar manufacturing, EPC and implementation. More than two thousand houses in the DGVCL area have rooftop solar installed and individual meter-based solar is also becoming popular in apartments. MSME industries are extensively using solar to save energy. The favorable environment of the area, EPC capacity and the proactivity of industrialists—all this together makes South Gujarat a fast-growing and emerging solar hub.
New Technology – SGSA’s Guidance towards the Future
Floating solar, hybrid solar, energy-storage systems, EV integration and smart meters—in all these areas, SGSA prepares EPC members for the future. By imparting knowledge of technology, guiding towards global standards and spreading awareness about possible solutions, SGSA is preparing South Gujarat for the next energy revolution. The organization believes that energy storage solutions will be the biggest game changer in the next five years.
SGSA’s proactive approach to challenges
The solar industry is currently facing challenges like industrial solar tariff, high cost of DCR products, complexity of open access permits, delay in subsidy payment process and shortage of skilled manpower. SGSA is regularly raising these issues with the government and is continuously working to make the industry more practical and industry-friendly. SGSA’s first approach is to convey the real problems of EPC companies to policymakers.
SGSA’s vision for the next five years
SGSA will focus on Solar Training Institute, development of Solar + EV + Storage ecosystem, solar awareness campaign in rural areas, and policy presentations for industrial solar clusters to put South Gujarat on the green energy map in the coming time. The organization believes that solar has immense potential, but market penetration is still low—and bridging this gap will be SGSA’s biggest mission in the coming years. SGSA’s aim is not just to increase solar adoption, but also to promote energy independence, technical competence, and sustainable development in the region.
Speaking to the Eugene Realty newspaper, SGSA Founder-Secretary Rakesh Trivedi said, “Surat is emerging as a solar city today, in addition to being a diamond city and a textile city. The widespread adoption of rooftop solar in South Gujarat, the growth of local solar panel manufacturing, and innovative projects like India’s first solar smart bus stand have helped Surat become a leader in the energy sector. With the combined commitment of Surat’s citizens, entrepreneurs, and government initiatives, Surat is gradually strengthening its position not only on the Indian but also global solar stage.”
This leadership team of SGSA is guiding the industry by bringing technical knowledge, industry experience, and understanding of the ground realities.
SGSA at the heart of South Gujarat’s green journey
SGSA today is not just an association—but a strong organization that drives the entire solar industry forward, provides training, does policy advocacy, and encourages quality-based development. SGSA’s contribution to the journey of making South Gujarat a “Green Energy Hub” is unique. The effort to enlighten and empower all three—the country, the industry, and the society—is at the heart of SGSA’s work.
