In the midst of the rapid pace of modern urbanization, where buildings are becoming taller, faster and more global, there are some architects who see buildings not just as concrete structures but as living relationships between human life, emotions and nature. Suresh Sakariya is one such thoughtful architect – for whom architecture is not just a profession, but a philosophy of life.

“Architecture is not just about functionality and aesthetics; it is about evoking emotions and creating experiences that connect humans with nature and the cosmic realm. (Architecture is not just about functionality and aesthetics; it touches emotions and creates experiences that connect humans with nature and the cosmic realm.)

This sentence is the centerpiece of his work and philosophy. Ar. Suresh Sakariya, Founder of Array Design Services, completed his architecture studies from MNIT (Malaviya National Institute of Technology), Jaipur, served as an academician at Girls Polytechnic, Surat and then entered professional practice.

Today, he is actively introducing human-centric and environment-conscious approaches to the built environment of the city through residential, commercial and institutional projects.

In this edition of Yugen Realty’s popular column ‘The Design Vanguard’, we take an in-depth look at the thought-provoking and nature-centric creative journey of Ar. Suresh Sakariya, a visionary architect who sees buildings as not just structures but living spaces of human experience.

Drawn To Nature Since Childhood

Suresh Sakariya’s childhood was spent in a farming family in Jamjodhpur village of Jamnagar district. The fields, soil, sky, wind and seasons—all these were the natural environment around him.

Nature became his first guru. Making various shapes of clay, drawing pictures, creating forms from aluminium wire—all these were not just hobbies, but inner creative expression.

In primary school, he was known for making figures, but at that time, architecture was a separate academic subject – he did not have this understanding at that time.

During the tenth standard, Principal Patel Saheb told him that there was a shortage of architects in the entire district and there were great opportunities in this profession.

He had his house built by an architect – this proved to be a training point for Sureshbhai. Since then, architecture became not just a career for him, but the voice of his heart.

He was not aware that an aptitude test for architecture was conducted after 12th, so he could not give the test and joined the Regional College of Architecture MNIT – Jaipur directly without the aptitude test.

Jaipur’s rich heritage, historical architecture, havelis, chopats, jalis and passive design elements – all these broadened his vision. Interaction with students from across the country and exposure to different cultures helped him become a more sensitive architect.

He says : “Architecture has deeper understanding pertaining to imagination, creativity and intelligence (Architecture is connected to imagination, creativity and intelligence and has a deep understanding of it.) – and all three are the fundamental foundations for human development.”

Personality and Design Approach : Down to Earth – Simple Nature

Suresh Sakariya believes that the roots of architecture lie in Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology (the study of human society and cultures and their development).

Architecture is not just a building, but a measure of civilization – which reflects human behaviour, culture and lifestyle.

He believes that design should not be developed away from nature, but should be developed with nature.

Ignoring the natural context is the biggest loss for architecture. My life is an open book, I stay connected to nature and society and learn.

His approach has always been human centric and environment conscious. He clearly says that many of today’s designs are limited to only GDCR or NBC norms – which is disappointing.

According to him, Design solutions are not only to practice with codes; they must enhance man’s life, respect cosmic connection and strengthen environmental balance. (Design solutions are not just about practicing with codes; they must enhance man’s life, respect cosmic connection and strengthen environmental balance.)

He believes that architecture is as important as looking good, it is also important that it feels good. A building should touch a person emotionally, connect with nature and improve the quality of life – this is his design philosophy.

Every Project – A Journey To Develop And Evolve

For Suresh Sakariya, every project is an evolving journey. Every site, every client, every budget and every construction condition is different.

Providing the best – best in class – solution within the limitations – this is the true skill of an architect. He believes that the bigger the challenge, the greater the value of the design.

Projects designed by Array Design Services include residential apartments, commercial complexes and institutional buildings.

In each project, they integrate physical planning, environmental planning and visual planning – so that the spaces are not only functional, but also experiential and meaningful. According to him, architecture is successful only when the user feels an emotional connection with the space.

Lessons Learned As A Designer

In his 37-year journey, he has understood that a good architect needs to be not only a designer, but also a multidisciplinary thinker.

An architect has to understand society, psychology, technology, environment and economy – everything. Without these three elements – innovation, creativity and intelligence – architecture cannot survive.

According to him, architecture is not only shelter (living space – working space) but also pleasure (joy).

A building should not only provide shelter to humans, but also provide a sense of well-being – a place where one feels physically, mentally and emotionally balanced.

The Role of The Architect In Today’s Times

Suresh Sakariya believes that the biggest challenge in today’s-built environment is the decline of human consciousness.

Buildings are becoming part of the problem, but human emotions, social interaction and connection with nature are being left behind.

Due to modern urbanization, people are being distanced from basic needs like gardens, grounds, social interaction – which leads to lifestyle disorders.

He believes that it is our responsibility as architects to create spaces where humans can commune with nature in the morning and evening, with seasons, festivals and groups.

In his words, “Modernity provides convenience, but nature makes us feel happy.” So, the ultimate purpose of his design is – to bring humans back to nature.

Balancing Nature With Technology

He accepts that technology is an important part of today’s era, but humans have to reconnect with nature. Land issues, environmental protection, optimal use of energy and sustainable development—all these will be the main focus of the coming times.

He warns that buildings built solely on the basis of building codes and bylaws may prove to be a concern in the future if they do not consider nature, human sensibilities and social perspectives.

A Journey of Development With Challenges

After 2002, he faced many challenges in his professional practice. Client expectations, budget constraints, site problems and implementation complexities—all these became a learning process for him.

But he believes that every challenge brings with it a solution. The combination of academic experience and practical practice—both make him a stronger and more balanced architect.

Vision For The Next Decade

His vision is simple but profound – “In the next ten years, I will continue to create architecture that is functional and attractive to both me and the people.”

His aim is not just to build buildings, but to establish a philosophy where architecture strikes a balance between nature, society and human life. He wants his designs to be meaningful and useful to people in the long run.

Inspiration : Charles Correa and Local Context

The deepest influence on Suresh Sakariya is the Indian architect Charles Correa. He finds his ability to design projects keeping the local context in mind extremely inspiring.

Contextual Architecture – that is also the main pillar of his own practice. He believes that the integration of local sensibilities with global thinking creates true architecture.

Message For Young Architects

“The profession is very good. There is a struggle, but if you have talent, you can succeed.” According to him, architecture develops not only by degrees, but by sensitivity, observation and a tendency to constantly learn.

This is his main advice to young designers to observe nature, understand society and be truthful in their work.

Architecture That Lives With Nature – A Philosophy

For Suresh Sakariya, architecture is a philosophical approach. He believes that humans absorb from nature from birth.

If this absorption is in harmony with nature, then human development can be more prosperous. He says that many of today’s buildings are only enough to comply with rules—which is a concern for the future.

The Priorities Of His Practice Are Clear :

  • Wise use of natural materials
  • A design approach that preserves nature
  • Spaces that keep human senses at the center

Sustainable and environmentally conscious planning

In his opinion, only when architecture strikes a balance between nature, humans and the universe, it becomes a “Miracle of Civilization” in the true sense.

Architecture is a miracle of civilization and it travels in your imagination, inspire to be creative enough practice your intelligence. (Architecture is a miracle of civilization and it travels in your imagination, inspires to be creative enough practice your intelligence.)

Architecture – A Way of Life

In this link to the design vanguard, Suresh Sakariya emerges not just as an architect, but as a thinker, philosopher and human-centered creator. His vision reminds us that architecture is not just a “building”—it is an “experience”, a “dialogue” and a “life”.

For Yugen Realty, exposing the world of such creators is not just a column, but a movement – where the talents that shape the city, society and the future get due recognition. Suresh Sakariya is one such personality who is shaping the city, society and the future beautifully.
