YUGEN REALTY, SURAT
Surat, known for its diamonds, textiles, and rapid development, has seen a transformative shift in its architectural landscape – thanks in large part to Design Work Group (DWG).
Founded in 2009 by Dinesh Suthar, Bharat Patel, and Jitendra Sabalpara, DWG has become a shining name in the world of architecture, backed by 17 years of experience, over 800 projects, and more than 25 national and international accolades.
Let’s explore DWG’s inspiring journey – their design philosophy, creative process, insights on emerging trends, and their vital role in shaping Surat’s skyline.
This is not just a story of an architectural firm; it’s a story of vision, collaboration, and impact – a journey that continues to inspire the design community, developers, clients, and the entire real estate industry.
The Birth of a Dream : The DWG Story
The story of DWG – Design Work Group – is a tale of friendship, hard work, creativity, design excellence, and the courage to dream big. Born into humble families, Dinesh Suthar and Jitendra Sabalpara have been friends since grade four, and Bharat Patel joined them during their college years.
Dinesh earned his architecture degree from SCET, Surat, and pursued a Master’s in Urban Design from Cardiff University, London. While working at Studio Real – a global architecture firm in London – he gained valuable international experience in master planning and neighborhood design.
Meanwhile, Jitendra and Bharat worked under renowned architect Falguni Desai in Surat, where they faced challenges head-on and learned rapidly.
Rooted in Gujarati-Marwari values, the trio embodies a fearless “let’s do it” mindset – even if they don’t yet know how to do it, they’ll learn and deliver. In 2009, during the global financial crisis, Bharat and Jitendra set up their first office in Meridian Tower, Udhna, with support from Damodarbhai Kachhi and Kanjibhai Bhalala.
Dinesh returned from London in 2010, and by 2012, the trio officially became partners. They designed a logo, created a website, and set up formal communication channels to build a credible presence in the market.
Philosophy : Architecture as a Tool to Enrich Life
For DWG, architecture is not just about designing buildings or spaces – it is a powerful medium that enhances human experience and silently shapes better living. Every project begins with three anchors: the client, the climate, and nature – whether it’s a global headquarters or a minimal home.
DWG’s creative process begins with a unique tool called the “Mind Sketch” – a thoughtful method to understand a client’s lifestyle, preferences, hobbies, and emotions.
They ask questions like : “What’s your morning routine?” “Do you practice yoga, hit the gym, or enjoy tea on the balcony?” “Who’s your favourite director – David Dhawan or Christopher Nolan?”
This helps decode the client’s taste and emotional landscape. Their friend and architect Kalapi Buch developed this form, which maps each family member’s needs. In nearly 90% of cases, the first layout becomes the final one – a testament to DWG’s client-centric approach.
Sustainability is the soul of DWG’s design ethos. Each project reflects climate-responsive design, natural lighting, ventilation, and use of regional materials.
For example, in the Season House, they used wind towers, terrazzo flooring, and special concrete, alongside seasonal plantation like Kesudo and Gulmohar, evoking spring, fall, or Holi.
A large northeast window ensures efficient cooling – reducing a 1.5-ton AC requirement to just 1 ton – setting new benchmarks in energy-saving residential design.
DWG also specializes in custom furniture and interior design that exudes luxury using minimal materials and varied finishes.
With Building Information Modeling (BIM), MEPF, and structural integration, their design process becomes more accurate and client-friendly. Technology enables deeper understanding of needs and faster solutions.
Deep Knowledge, Integrity & Ethics : The Foundation of DWG
What truly sets DWG apart is their profound subject knowledge, work ethic, and unwavering integrity. They strictly avoid commissions – a malpracticed norm that compromises design quality and finish. In one case, Jitendra even advised a client against building a 20,000 sq. ft. bungalow, saying 8,000-9,000 sq. ft. was sufficient. This honesty-built trust.
They’re not afraid to say no – even at the risk of losing a project – if it’s not in the client’s best interest. Their name commands such respect that vendors won’t even show substandard materials, saying, “This isn’t for DWG’s clients.” Their reputation is built on honesty – if they make a mistake, they admit and fix it, because for them, honesty is the best policy.
The Weight of Architecture
“I didn’t fully grasp the seriousness of architecture during my studies,” Jitendra reflects. “One day, Falguni Desai asked me, ‘Do you realize someone will spend their lifetime – even retire – in the house you design? It’s a bigger responsibility than being a doctor. Are you ready for that?’ That hit me hard.
I spent days thinking. Then I studied 200–250 books and understood the philosophies of architects like FLW, Aravossis, and Ian Pye. That’s when I truly realized – architecture is not just design. It’s about shaping lives. And that’s why, at the center of every design, is the client.”
Reimagining Surat’s Skyline
Surat is rapidly growing, but its architecture is “underperforming.” Buildings must be livable, innovative, and appealing. Many lack creative planning, open spaces, and community integration. Thinking “out of the box” doesn’t mean low profit – it means design that adds value, commands a premium, and sells faster. Surat urgently needs design that is innovative, functional, and aesthetically bold. It’s time for large developers to show courage and create iconic buildings that transform the cityscape.
Team, Culture & Continuous Learning
DWG’s core strength lies in its dynamic team – an eclectic mix of young, skilled, and seasoned design professionals, including architects, civil engineers, urban designers, and interior experts. The office operates from 9:30 AM to 6:30 PM, with a shared lunch hour that reinforces team bonding. From 1:00 to 2:00 PM, a “Do Not Disturb” board goes up, creating a sacred space for rest. Every Saturday at 5:00 PM, the team gathers for a presentation – not just on architecture or interiors, but also on yoga, movies, politics, or any topic that sparks creative thought and discussion.
Recognition & Global Impact
With over 25 awards to its name, DWG’s excellence speaks for itself. Being a finalist at the 2024 World Architecture Festival (WAF) and winning the BLT Award for Kev House in Surat count among their proudest achievements. Initially hesitant to submit for the globally prestigious WAF, they took a leap of faith – and earned recognition on the world stage.
Other accolades, like the 2023 ICEA UltraTech Award for Shebbi House, have cemented DWG’s standing. They’ve been featured across leading global platforms including ArchDaily, RED in Monochrome, Braun, IAG, BA, Domus, Archello, Dezeen, Architectural Digest, Mooool, DIVISARE, and Architizer. But for DWG, the most treasured award remains the trust and satisfaction of their clients.
Vision for the Future : Sustainable & Human-Centric Design
DWG sees the future of architecture rooted in sustainability, smart technology, and a deeply human-centric approach. Surat, they believe, lacks engaging public spaces – places where people can gather, unwind, and connect. Unlike cities abroad, where public life thrives even at night, Surat falls short.
DWG envisions transforming this reality. Their dream is to design a city infused with peace, inclusivity, and environmental consciousness – where design elevates everyday life. “Even at 85, we’ll still be working,” they say, “because the hunger to learn never dies.”
Message to Young Designers & Developers
To the next generation of designers and developers, DWG offers a clear and honest message :
Master your subject. Uphold integrity. Serve architecture with sincerity and respect. No project is too small – whether 300 sq. ft. or 3 lakh sq. ft., give it your soul. Win trust, stay away from unethical shortcuts. And don’t mistake hard work for struggle – it’s simply your gateway to growth.
The DWG Story : A Blueprint for Aspiration
DWG’s journey is more than a professional timeline – it’s a story of friendship, honesty, and creativity coming together to redefine the design landscape of Surat. With landmark projects like Greenlab Diamonds, Kev House, and Season House, DWG has shown that architecture isn’t just about buildings – it’s about philosophies, dreams, and enriching lives. For young designers, developers, clients, and all those connected to real estate, DWG’s rise is a powerful example of how ethics, sustainability, and client-centric thinking can transform the future of a city.
Their mantra is simple yet profound : “Strive for excellence every single time.” And that, indeed, is the foundation of their success.
