Rander’s Heritage Structures Reflect Cultural Sensitivities.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) celebrates World Heritage Week from November 19 to 25. To mark the occasion, Surat Heritage Trust organized a Heritage Walk at Rander, a site older than Surat itself.
The walk covered approximately 3 kilometers, during which architect Prakruti Desai from Angan Collaborative LLP and conservation architect Sumesh Modi provided detailed information about various historical landmarks.
Participants were also provided with a heritage map of Rander. Esteemed citizens, youth, women, students, and history enthusiasts from Surat attended this walk.
Started at 8:00 AM from Mandvi Ovara, the Heritage Walk included landmarks such as Kavi Narmad School, Adeshwar Bhagwan’s Derasar, Jain Upashray, Rander Sudhrai, Khanqah, ancient chabutras, Nagina Masjid, Panch Batti, Mehfile Islam Library, Teen Batti, Bham Waqf, Lala Thakor’s Pol, Manibhadra Derasar, and artistic mansions with intricate carvings. The walk concluded at 10:30 a.m. with a reception ceremony at Rander People’s Co-op Bank.
Rander’s Priceless Heritage is Well Preserved : Purvi Patel
Sanjay Choksi : “This walk was an eye-opener, showcasing that Rander is older than Surat and still retains much of its rich heritage. Architect Prakruti Desai’s extensive work on Rander provided valuable insights, and the contributions of architects Sumesh Modi and Binita Pandya, with their years of experience in heritage conservation and education, were immensely beneficial.”
Purvi Patel : “Rander, which predates Surat, remains an integral and cherished part of our history. Its priceless heritage is still well-preserved. We urge the next generation to take responsibility for safeguarding this legacy in the future.”
Vishwa Shah : “As a conservation architect, I realized there is much left to explore in my own city. While I’ve studied the Zampa Bazaar area, Rander boasts numerous untouched heritage structures that reflect deep cultural sensitivities.”
The walk successfully highlighted the significance of Rander’s historical and cultural heritage, urging collective efforts for its preservation.
