Ishwar Gehi, Principal Architect of IGA India, is known for his nature-inspired and culturally rooted designs. Born in Mendarda (Junagadh district), he earned his architecture degree from M.S. University, Vadodara, and won the JK Architect of the Year Award.

He started his independent practice in Rajkot in 1995. His works in Surat, Rajkot, Jamnagar, and Mumbai reflect a thoughtful blend of aesthetics and functionality. Guided by the belief “Mother Nature is my Guru,” his designs echo a deep commitment to society.

In this edition of The Design Vanguard by Yugen Realty, we delve into the creative world of Ishwar Gehi – a visionary transforming our homes, workplaces, and cityscapes with elegance and insight.

1. How did you discover your calling as an architect or interior designer? Was it a lifelong dream or a surprising discovery?

I completed my 10th in Mendarda and 12th in Vallabh Vidyanagar. My father was a businessman, but I was drawn to the building line.

I barely knew about architecture, but received an admission letter from M.S. University. A neighbour advised, “Grab the opportunity.”

I got in – admission, hostel, everything. Nature unexpectedly opened the door to architecture. What started as an unknown path became an inspiring journey, beyond dreams.

2. How would you define your personality in one word or phrase – and how does it influence your design approach?

“Nature-Inspired.” Nature is the soul of my design. Elements like trees, sunlight, and water are deeply embedded in my spaces, making them vibrant, serene, and balanced. This adds comfort, joy, and beauty to people’s everyday lives.

3. What is a surprising fact about you that people around you don’t know but would find interesting?

I failed my final year of architecture – but kept it to myself. I worked hard, retook the exams, and passed with first class.

I trained under Kishore Trivedi in Rajkot, doing eight years’ worth of work in six. That failure turned into the foundation of my success.

4. What is the most memorable project you have worked on, and why is it special to you?

Arya Club in Rajkot is special – it represents me as both architect and entrepreneur. It succeeded despite major challenges.

Golden Palm City in Kosamba went from concept sketch to execution in record time, showcasing creativity under pressure and unwavering focus.

5. What is the most important lesson you have learnt in your journey as a designer over the years?

Incorporating nature into design brings spaces to life. When architecture, interiors, and landscaping are unified, the space thrives in both aesthetics and functionality. This integrated design approach helps unlock potential and ensures faster, more successful project execution.

6. What is a unique skill or signature style you bring to your work that sets you apart?

Design is a lifelong learning process. I draw inspiration from nature and innovation. I work with honesty, ethics, and passion. My designs must first satisfy me – only then can they satisfy the client. I strive to understand client needs and deliver original, effective outcomes. That defines me.

We invest time in understanding our clients’ needs and deliver creative, innovative solutions. If they don’t understand the design initially, we explain its value, uniqueness, and market relevance. Our strength lies in timely and skilled project execution.

7. In your opinion, what is the most important role of architects and interior designers in today’s built environment?

Architects shape spaces that influence how people feel, live, and connect. Great design can uplift moods, transform cities, and improve health and lifestyle. Our job is to design places that bring joy, comfort, and inspiration – architects truly shape the future.

8. What is more important to you in design – creativity or functionality – and why?

Both are essential. Creative ideas without usability are hollow, and purely functional designs without aesthetics lack soul. A good space needs both – a thoughtful balance that delights and performs.

9. How do you think the design industry will evolve in the next decade, especially with the trends in technology and sustainability?

AI and tech will accelerate design processes and broaden options. Sustainability will gain more focus, urging architects to design greener, smarter spaces. Tech will bring new challenges, but if used wisely, it will enhance both efficiency and creativity.

10. What is one major difficulty or challenge you have faced in your career, and how did you overcome it?

Failing my final year was a setback. But I didn’t lose heart. I quietly worked, retook the exams, and passed. That experience taught me how to turn failure into strength and fuel for success.

11. What is the big picture for your career as a designer? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

My sons, Yash and Meet, are both architects trained in London, with global exposure. Together, we are entering a new phase. We’re already active nationally, and now expanding globally – with projects in Dubai, the UK, and more to come. I believe this is truly my beginning.

12. If you could redesign one aspect of the design industry, what would it be and why?

Government by-laws need modernization. Streamlining design and construction approvals would reduce delays and improve quality. A simplified and transparent system would unlock the full potential of our industry.

13. On a personal level, what hobby, dream or goal outside of work inspires you?

Singing and music are my passions. They bring inner peace and recharge my creative spirit. This energy flows back into my design thinking and execution.

14. What stimulates your creativity when designing – any particular method, environment, or tools?

A relaxed, informal setting fosters creativity. Our office promotes that. My team works with enthusiasm and freedom. Personally, I find peak creativity in solitude – often at 3:00 AM – when my thoughts and nature connect deeply.

15. Who or what inspires you the most in your work – a person, a place, or a philosophy?

Nature is my ultimate teacher. Its simplicity, harmony, and aesthetics offer endless lessons. The works of legendary architects also inspire me – their depth and innovation push me forward.

16. Which iconic architect, designer or project (past or present) has left the biggest impression on your creative journey and inspires you the most, and why?

Frank Lloyd Wright was ahead of his era – his harmony with nature shaped modern architecture. Charles Correa, on the other hand, connected Indian tradition with modern design. Both proved that architecture can be spiritual and rooted in culture.

17. Of all the projects you have completed, which one are you most proud of, and why?

Kasturi Pride, High Street, Arya Club (Rajkot) and our Surat office – which is the city’s most photographed building – fill me with pride. They reflect my creativity, determination, and love for India’s cultural essence.

18. What is your favourite part of being an architect or interior designer – something that keeps you excited every day?

Turning ideas into tangible spaces gives me joy. I thrive on execution – collaborating with consultants and builders to make every detail count. Watching a vision turn real and long-lasting is deeply rewarding.

19. What advice would you give to budding architects or interior designers who are just starting out?

Let integrity and honesty be your foundation. Work hard, embrace technology, but give room for your creativity to flourish. Your designs should reflect who you are. Guide your clients truthfully and deliver high value with efficiency.

20. If you were to describe your design style as a movie or song, what would it be and why?

“जिसकी रचना सुंदर हो, वो स्वयं कितना सुंदर होगा !” My design is like a soulful song – a harmonious blend of nature, culture, and modernism that breathes life into space, making it functional and emotionally rich.
